Why ORVI

Three reasons international buyers choose us as their Namibian grape supplier.

Premium Varieties

The blocks are replanted as market demand shifts, so what we can offer tracks what buyers are asking for now rather than what sold well a decade ago.

Certifications

Certified Quality

Certified to GlobalGAP and Tesco Nurture standards, with SIZA Environmental and SIZA Social alongside them. The food safety system follows HACCP principles from the vine to the sealed container.

Early season

Reliable Supply

Reefer containers leave from Walvis Bay and Cape Town and reach European ports in around 21 days. Logistics run through Transworld Cargo (opens in a new tab), our affiliated company inside the same group.

From Vine to Market

Four steps between the vine and the sealed container, the whole chain inside 48 hours.

Growing

Precision irrigation and integrated pest management, under more than 300 days of sun a year. That combination is what builds the colour and the sugar.

Harvesting

Every bunch is hand-picked at optimal ripeness in the cool early-morning hours to preserve crunch and flavour.

Field Packing

Grapes are packed in the field and go straight into our own cold rooms on the farm. Packing format follows whatever the destination market requires.

Cold Chain & Export

Forced cooling, then the container is packed and sealed on the farm itself. Transworld Cargo, our affiliated company, takes it from there.

Around 900 people bring in the harvest here, across the nine weeks from early November to early January.

Growing in the Desert Since 2001

ORVI started in 2001 with a small piece of land in the Aussenkehr valley. The conditions there suit table grapes almost too well: an isolated desert climate with more than 300 days of sun, irrigation from the Orange River, and almost no rain during the harvest window.

Because we farm in the Southern Hemisphere, that harvest lands between early November and early January, which is when European supply is at its lowest.

Nothing Goes to Waste

Not every bunch meets export specification. Rather than discard that fruit, we lay it out to dry on the farm and it becomes raisins, which we sell alongside our table grapes. The same conditions that sweeten the grapes do the drying: intense sun, very low humidity, almost no rain. The fruit needs no artificial heat. A further selection goes into Orvignac (opens in a new tab), our oak barrel matured Namibian brandy.
